Dinner Party
Dinner Party was another lyric I wrote during the songwriting practice with Jayna Jennings! I wrote this during the time when the country was on lock down for COVID-19!!! The inspiration behind this was how bad I missed being able to visit with friends like we used to be able to do freely. Being isolated was hard on many people and the little things we took for granted now mean so much to many people. Not being around others made me appreciate the company even more and reuniting with friends was what I looked forward to after the isolation period was over. Thank you for reading these lyrics!
In His Shoes I Shall Walk
This was a lyric I wrote while participating in a songwriters practice group hosted by the wonderfully talented Jayna Jennings. The subject for the exercise was "A Walk" and within a couple hours this is what I came up with.
This song is about the choices we make and how they can impact your future. There will be curves and crossroads along the way in the path of life but even if you choose the wrong path you can still be led back if you listen to the words of God and walk in his shoes. Thank you for taking time to read this and I hope you enjoy the lyrics as much as I enjoyed writing them!
Stronger
Stronger is the first lyric I showed to my friends and the one that I showed to Michael Stover of MTS Records. Michael Stover wrote: This lyric is very powerful!
That was the push I needed to submit my lyrics to a producer. So it was my first official submission to Nashville Song Service for review and this is what they wrote:
"Repeating stronger through out the lyric is catchy and it creates cohesion which drives the song forward"...
"The emotion has been captured and expressed well which is important because emotion is how people connect with music"...
"I like "Stronger". It's a lyric we'd be interested in working on with you"...
...this lyric would become a great song.-Rachel Cristaldi (Nashville Song Service)
Nobody Sees the Real Me
I began writing just to ease my mind during rough times in my life, never intending to ever show my lyrics to anyone. But the more I began writing the better I thought my lyrics were becoming. After showing them to several friends they told me I should try getting them produced. But I still was not convinced that they was good enough. The deciding factor came when I passed one to Michael Stover -Owner of MTS Records.
Michael convinced me that the lyrics I sent him was good. So I decided to send a few out to see what a production company would say.
Nobody Sees the Real Me was the very first song I wrote. The words just seemed to flow as I began writing it. I submitted this song just the way it was written and the producer liked it the way it was. This is what she said about the lyrics:
Strong title because it's intriguing and makes you want to hear the lyric....
There is good rhyme which creates good rhythm which makes the song flow well... The idea is solid and presented well with good length and structure....
I like "Nobody Sees the Real Me". -Rachel Cristaldi (Nashville Song Service)
Teach Me How To Sing
"Teach Me How To Sing" was my first attempt at a Traditional Country lyric. The story is that of a dream that many have had to go to Music City Nashville and become a musician and learn how to make it in the music industry. It is a prayer song that he wants the Lord to help in his journey and teach him along the way.
The story line in this lyric is well told in each verse and the chorus ties it all together to make for a lyric that many could relate to. Many artists have said they really like the Traditional Country feel of the lyrics with its catchy chorus lines.
Take A Chance
Take A Chance was written about relationships where a good guy tries to rescue the beautiful girl he is in love with from going back to an abusive relationship. He tries to show her what love is and convince her that she is the one he dreams of and wants her to change her life choices. But like most stories go she decides to overlook the abuse because of her love and leaves the good guy for the bad boy! The story is to bring awareness to domestic abuse and to show that not all guys are abusive and you can make a choice to get away from it with some change in your life.
Love Is Not A Game
This is the most recent lyric I have written. It comes from personal experiences that I have endured. This song along with "Nobody Sees the Real Me", "I Got this Feeling" and "Take a Chance" are all part of a big story that depicts what I have been through with relationships. I hope you enjoy my story and lyrics and please feel free to send me a note to tell me if you have had similar experiences.
Thanks for reading. - J.L.Martin
I Got This Feeling
This lyrics talks about the feelings you get after really getting to know someone but you are afraid to share with them when you don't know if they feel the same way. The lyrics draws on the physical feelings that go along with the emotions one might have in the same situation. I hope you enjoy these lyrics and that they pull you into them the way love does. Thanks for taking time to read them. - J.L.Martin
I Keep Fighting
This is a lyric I wrote that talks about the struggles of
everyday life that we all go through and how we get
through them. If you dig down deep, each and everyone
of us has the strength inside to get through anything that
is thrown at us. There is a warrior inside of you that will
keep fighting. Whether it is to achieve a dream or just
get through a tough time, never give up and keep fighting
one day at a time. Hope you enjoy these!
